PROGRAM AGENDA
6 hours of CE (COPE Accredited)

Course Descriptions

Neuroimaging 101 for the Optometrist (1CE hour)

The use of neuroimaging is becoming increasingly important in providing quality care to patients. The course will review indications, appropriate ordering, and interpretation of CT and MR imaging that may be used in a neuro-ophthalmic practice. Ophthalmic disease cases are used to emphasize clinical application and interpretation of neuroimaging.

Pupils: When to Watch, When to Worry (1CE hour)

The pupil gives valuable information about the visual pathway, autonomic nervous system, and cranial nerves.  Using case examples, we will relate the anatomy of the pupillary pathway to clinical changes that occur with ocular and systemic disease, trauma, and medications. We will cover the characteristics of five pupil disorders that should be managed emergently.

Systemic Drugs and Ocular Side Effects (2CE hours)

Several systemic medications may cause potential ocular side effects that the patient may or may not be aware of. This case-based course reviews twenty systemic medication groups that have the potential to cause ocular complications.

Glaucoa Mimickers (1CE hour)

Differentiating glaucoma from nonglaucomatous optic neuropathies can be difficult even for experienced doctors.  This interactive presentation uses case examples to demonstrate how to effectively use the case history, visual acuities, disc appearance, area of nerve fiber layer loss, and pattern of visual field loss to differentiate between glaucoma and other optic neuropathies.

Ocular Pain Management: A Clinical Drug Review (1CE hour)

Pain is a symptom that accompanies many eye diseases. This course discusses various medications used in managing pain, their mechanisms of action, clinical application to specific eye diseases, and potential adverse effects, including addiction from scheduled drugs.
